Firstly the QOD: “Popularity is a state of being”- me. This quote I’ll be explaining in today’s “depression causes”. Today the cause of depression that teens face is balance. Balance between everything, let’s look at the things teens have to balance:
- School: This is a big one, but not the biggest; the truth of the matter is like some other teens, I don’t necessarily need a degree, or a diploma. Let’s say for some reason tomorrow I got kicked out of highschool I would be fine why? Well here’s the plan—–> Get a job at Exxon/Mcdonalds minimum wage work really hard—–>Get enough money for a plane ticket, for me this would probably be to india for their extreme empathy—-> become a buddhist, become a buddhist guru—-> make money from people wanting to consult with me—–> invest—-> use money to start a company, become millionaire—-> use reputation to go to harvard business extension school—–> “Look at me, I’m Gordon Gecko”. My point with this ludicrous story is that you can achieve your dreams from any position in life. Sorry to any enlightened ones I offended.
- Work:Believe it or not a majority of teens work, whether its at a bagel shop, or you own one of the largest specialized e-commerce sites in the western hemisphere, the point is they work. This can really put a strain on you: I personally failed two classes while stressing out over finding investors to invest in a 14-16 year old. Other kids can’t study for a history test because they have work from 9-5.
- Sports: This is also a biggie, during wrestling season I have practice from 3-6 6 days a week in addition to matches, lifting and running. This is absolutely ridiculous, firstly the physical strain harms us, and put’s a big strain on us. (Yes working out is good for business productivity, but too much is adversary to your goals.)
- Social life:This is a biggie, firstly let’s start with the classics, going to the movies hanging out after school, talking in class. Your spending at least 2 hours a day, 7 days a week on this stuff. It’s ridiculous to think how much time we use on social interactions. Now let’s add in the phone, and computer, well this is a whole nother category isn’t it?
- Technology/Media Consumption: Right now our media consumption is higher than it’s ever been in history. In fact, (and sorry I have no source to cite, but I remember this) we consume more media in one day than people in the 16th century or so did in their entire lives. Our phones are constantly going off, we have to check our flipboards, our instagrams, facebook, twitter, ask.fm, formspring, google +, and whatever other networks we happen to be on, this is non-stop and a priority.
So here’s a tip to parents, when your teenagers busy, or lazy or tired, don’t assume they don’t work hard, assume they don’t work smart.
